On Thursday afternoons I hang out with some pretty smart kids. For the last year and a half I tutored the sixth graders - working on math and reading together - but last week I parked my blanket under the tree with the third graders and already love these guys completely. Math here seems to be the subject most of the kids struggle with the most. The kids learn to keep count by putting each finger to their lips one by one - as they do addition. Which works up to 10 - huh? Today we used acorns and "pretended" we had the bigger number already in one hand to help them visualize internally - well, that and I got a little tired of counting out all those acorns.
